Check a Contractor’s License

Ask for the contractor’s license number and verify it through the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors.

The Board’s search allows you to look up a license by number, company name, or individual name. Confirm that the license is current and appropriate for the proposed work. If you’re unsure which license is needed, contact the Board for guidance.

Questions to Ask Before Work Begins

A good conversation can help you understand your options and avoid surprises. Consider asking:

  • What is causing the problem, and what are my repair or replacement options?
  • Who is the licensed contractor responsible for this work?
  • Can you provide proof of liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage, if applicable?
  • What service-call or diagnostic fees apply?
  • Can I receive a written estimate explaining what is included and excluded?
  • Will permits or inspections be needed, and who will arrange them?
  • What is the expected schedule, and how will changes or additional costs be approved?
  • What warranties cover the equipment and the installation or repair?
  • Who should I contact if I have questions after the work is completed?
  • Know who is coming into your home. Ask whether the person performing the work is an employee of the contractor you hired or an independent subcontractor. If the work will be subcontracted, ask who is responsible for the work and verify that the individual or company performing it has any required license and appropriate insurance coverage.

Understand Your Estimate

For a major repair or replacement, compare the details of proposals—not just the total price.

Ask about equipment models, materials, labor, disposal, permits, payment terms, and warranty coverage. Before authorizing work, make sure you understand the scope and receive a copy of anything you sign.

For HVAC replacement, ask how the recommended system size was determined. For plumbing work, ask whether the proposal includes restoring any walls, floors, or landscaping disturbed during the project.

Permits and Inspections

Ask your contractor whether your project requires a permit and inspection. Your city or county inspections department can confirm the requirements for your location and the work being proposed.

When permits are required, clarify who will obtain them and arrange inspections. Keep the permit and inspection records with your project paperwork.

After the Work Is Complete

Keep your estimate or contract, invoices, payment records, equipment information, warranties, and inspection documents together.

Ask your contractor to explain recommended maintenance, any warranty registration requirements, and how to request follow-up service.

Have a Concern About a Contractor?

If it is safe and practical, start by explaining your concern to the company in writing and requesting a response. Keep copies of correspondence, photographs, contracts, invoices, and payment records.
